This quote is saying that once you allow yourself to love something it can become overwhelming to ones self. Just like when the water gets into the boat it goes down, just like allowing your heart to be filled w/ money will make you greedy. These beliefs are different from the Native Americans because they only used what was necessary for them to continue living comfortably.
